BRAIN HEALTH
Preservation of optimal brain structure, mental sharpness and agility, cognitive function, and emotional and mental well being all fall under the broad title of brain health.
It's a critical- in fact the most important - part of our overall wellness. Optimizing the function of the brain is essential to performance and health.
Image One is excited to partner alongside SyMRI to provide our patients with the next level of Quantitative Brain MRI. This unique technology measures the tissue properties of the brain in a single MRI scan, providing quantitative data, automatic tissue segmentation & volume measurements, and adjustable contrast weightings. The segmentation and volume measurements of brain tissue including myelin, white matter, grey matter, and cerebrospinal fluid provide tools for establishing an individualized quantitative patient baseline, tracking disease progression and comparison with control groups.
We believe these measurements and biomarkers are important enough to be included in every brain scan we perform and can be monitored over time with repeat imaging.

Why these measurements matter:
1.
2
3.
4.

1. Myelin
-
A protective substance that forms an isolating layer around the nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord.
-
Made up of protein and fatty substances, it functions like the plastic around an electrical wire allowing electrical impulses to travel quickly and efficiently between one nerve cell and the next.
-
Monitoring myelin in the brain helps diagnose diseases like as Multiple Sclerosis, track cognitive decline and evaluate the effectiveness of myelin repair therapies.
2. White Matter
-
Made up of a large network of nerve fibres, allowing communication between different areas of the brain. Requires good blood flow and nutrients.
-
Signs and symptoms of white matter disease include: Memory problems, balance issues and falls, mood changes, and difficulty performing 2 or more tasks at once.
-
Neurologists and healthcare providers use MRI to diagnose and measure the extent of any white matter damage.
3. Gray Matter
-
Plays the most significant role in allowing humans to function normally throughout the day.
-
It makes up the most outer layer of the brain and is responsible for processing information, memory, regulating emotions, and decision making.
-
Conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease can damage gray matter over time. A traumatic brain injury or lack of oxygen or blood flow can damage this tissue as well.
-
Tracking gray matter can help identify changes in volume and density, which may indicate neurological conditions.
4. Cerebrospinal Fluid
-
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear, colourless liquid that cushions, protects, and nourishes the brain and spinal cord and helps remove waste.
-
It balances the weight of the weight of the brain and helps it float. It keeps the brain's temperature and pressure steady and supports the immune system by carrying immune cells and antibodies.
-
Measuring CSF with MRI can diagnose and monitor conditions like Chiari Malformations, CSF leaks, and normal pressure hydrocephalus.
