What is Whole Body Imaging?

Whole Body MRI is a powerful imaging tool, scanning the body from head through knees. This scan evaluates for any actionable findings, diseases or conditions, and provides a general assessment of structural health.

Whole Body Imaging is for anyone with a goal of preventative health in mind. It is designed for those seeking information so they can move toward improving and maintaining optimal health and wellness.

What can a Whole Body MRI detect?

The list of potential findings with a Whole Body MRI is extensive.  This 60-minute scan evaluates detailed images across five key areas of the body to detect conditions such as:

Head/Neck

Chest

Abdomen

Pelvis

Spine/Bones/Joints

  • Evidence of prior stroke or traumatic brain injury

  • White matter changes including MS

  • Structural abnormalities of the head or neck

  • Aneurysm or other microvascular changes

  • Enlarged lymph nodes

  • Structural abnormalities or excess fluid in the chest wall

  • Certain lung nodules or masses (over a certain size)

  • Enlarged lymph nodes

  • General assessment of heart and size of the aorta

  • Breast masses over a certain size (Mammography is globally recommended as the gold standard for breast imaging)

  • Cysts or lesions in the solid organs (liver, pancreas, kidneys, spleen)

  • Fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis)

  • Iron overload conditions (hemochromatosis)

  • Gallbladder inflammation/abnormalities, gallstones

  • Pancreatitis

  • Adrenal cysts, adenomas, lesions

  • Renal atrophy, hydronephrosis/obstruction

Limitations

Items to Note:

If you have had prior imaging requiring follow up, or are currently being investigated for a diagnosed condition such as cancer, Whole Body Imaging may not be the correct test for you.  It does not replace a dedicated CT, MRI, PET scan, ultrasound, or bloodwork.

Whole Body MRI reports try to be as comprehensive as possible, however given the extensive anatomic coverage, number of sequences and images, not every finding may be documented or commented upon, particularly if it is deemed of no clinical significance by the radiologist. The main goal of the report is to document and advise on clinically relevant or actionable findings.

As with all imaging tests, there are inherent limitations to Whole Body Imaging that prevent detection or identification of all cancers and diseases.

Whole Body Imaging provides a great snapshot of your current health in the moment and what is accurate for you right now.  It cannot guarantee any future outcomes regarding your well being.
