Breast Imaging

Breast Cyst

51 year old presented with palpable mass. Mammography and ultrasound confirmed a lesion with an

appearance most compatible with a cyst. The patient had a family history of breast cancer and after

discussion with her doctor decided to have MRI to exclude any other pathology.

A 2cm lesion and some smaller lesions were demonstrated. Their hyperintense signal on T2 weighted

images and diminished signal on T1 weighted images are consistent with fluid characteristics. No

enhancement of the lesions was seen. This correlates well with the other imaging modalities and gave

the patient the reassurance she needed.

Breast Implants

56 year old presented with concern over stability of silicon implants. There was also a clinical history of previous breast cancer. Curvilinear intracapsular changes are seen along the margins of both implants in keeping with the presence of so-called radial folds. There is no definite evidence of a rupture. MRI has been shown to detect small breast lesions that may not be as apparent on mammography and MRI can successfully image dense breast tissue (common in younger women) and breast implants. Evaluation of enhancement kinetics or contrast enhancement patterns coupled with excellent soft tissue delineation, make MR a very sensitive breast imaging tool.

Research has shown, that malignant lesions consistently enhance, earlier and to a greater degree than benign lesions.

Brain & Cervical Cord MS Plaques

34 year old female presented with bilateral upper arm weakness and lack of concentration. Innumerable periventricular and subcortical hyperintense lesions are demonstrated in both hemispheres. A hyperintense lesion is also seen in the cervical cord at C3-4 level.

The presentation is consistent with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis.
